From art-world greats to gardens, ceramics and the month’s biggest cultural and design celebrations, the start of 2024 promises to be exciting

‘Unravel: The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art’, The Barbican

This exhibition explores how fabrics have the power to transform political structures and tell new, layered stories. Works by Tracey Emin, Faith Ringgold and Louise Bourgeois, to name a few, will showcase the variety of ways in which textiles connote resistance and repair. 14 February-26 May ( barbican.org.uk).

‘By My Hands’, Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Ceramic artist and TikTok sensation Florian Gadsby, who found fame by sharing videos of himself making pots (apparently Anna Wintour has one), presents a new body of work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, allowing more fans to finally see his stoneware in the flesh. Until 25 February (ysp.org.uk).

‘The Waiting Gardens of the North’, The Baltic

Can’t wait for spring to bloom? Renowned Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz’s exhibition sees a living indoor garden take over the top floor of The Baltic, located on the Quayside in Gateshead. Now’s the perfect time to catch the exhibition as all of the flowers will be in bloom – they have been growing in the gallery since it opened in July last year. Until 26 May ( baltic.art).

‘Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind’, Tate Modern

Yoko Ono is the star of what promises to be one of Tate Modern’s 2024 highlights. The retrospective will cover her most controversial artworks and memorable performances. Stop by ‘Wish Tree’, where you can add your own hopes for peace. 15 February-1 September (tate.org.uk).

Chinese New Year, London

Celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon (said to bring good luck) and join the thousands marking the occasion by parading through the streets of central London. Expect traditional costumes and plenty of good fortune. After the parade, stroll to the Autob
