The inspiration
The elaborate clam-shaped canopy above the front door of the renowned ‘party pad’ Kin House was the inspiration behind many of the decorative choices for its interior, which is the work of the design team at Barlow & Barlow. This influence can be seen in the shell-like light fixtures as well as the use of Fermoie’s ‘Shell Grotto’ fabric, which has been used to wrap freestanding tubs in some of the rooms. Nowhere else is shell mania more evident, though, than in this alcove on the ground floor, which decorative artist Mel Campion spent weeks transforming into a miniature grotto. She focused on abalone shells, chosen for their luminosity and pink interiors that add a delicate blush hue – the building blocks for this month’s palette.
