To coincide with Tate Modern’s upcoming exhibition ‘Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter And The Blue Rider’ (25 April-20 October), we’re shining a light on the momentous 20th-century art movement by bringing together interiors, homeware and decorating projects injected with the same abstract, polychromatic emotion

The inspiration

If we were to illustrate what it looks like when light pierces through shards of coloured glass (as in our styled shoot on the previous page), it might result in something similar to Wassily Kandinsky’s 1923 artwork Circles in a Circle. The Russian artist’s oil painting features prismatic colours, circular specks of dust and diagonal rays that intersect at its centre, recalling beams of light. Kandinsky made the work while teaching at the Bauhaus (the institution that also became renowned for its impact on modern architecture), and the school’s predilection for geometricism and abstract arrangements of colours and lines was clearly an influence.
