Podcaster Kelechi Okafor’s debut novel, Edge of Here, was born out of her experiences in therapy. ‘To write the characters so richly, I first needed to understand myself and my complex emotions,’ she says. The books and authors she admires most? ‘Octavia Butler’s Wild Seed, and I read On Black Sisters Street and fell in love with Chika Unigwe. Toni Morrison said: “If there’s a book that you want to read that hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it…” I wrote the book I wanted to read.’

Few people understand social media quite like Amy Brewster. ‘I fell into it, working online when Instagram was only a year old, but what has kept me here is the variety. There are always new platforms and algorithms.’ As the head of social for ELLE, Amy manages all the brand’s channels. She loves the accounts that don’t take fashion too seriously, such as @stylenotcom. ‘Saint Hoax’s hot takes on big cultural moments are addictive.
