Imagine… one single family tree in the world

8 min read

Would you like to work with other genealogists on a thoroughly researched, free, online family tree – in a research environment where respect for fully referenced genealogical source citations are the order of the day? If so, we think you’ll rather like WikiTree. Mags Gaulden-7 & Greg Clarke-11007 are here to give you a tour of the WikiTree website and 10 of their favourite on-site tools to help you.

Editing profiles: The philosophy at WikiTree is for each person to have only one profile; you will likely be working with other genealogists on an ancestor’s profile. The collaboration is not to aid speed, but to enhance excellence.
Note you are encouraged to state the certainty of your facts and of course to cite your sources too. Encouragement is provided (via the welcome emails) to take your time and proceed carefully and as correctly as you can.

What would happen if there was only one single family tree – in the world? We would all be able to find our ancestors and only look once. Sounds like genealogy in a perfect world – or at least in the 21st century, right?

Introducing WikiTree

WikiTree has been working to create a global family tree since 2008. A truly global family tree, with one profile per person who ever lived, within the genealogical timeframe (back to around the time we started using surnames).

WikiTree does this by creating a collaborative community for genealogists who work together on shared ancestors.

It’s a robust community built upon a 9-point honour code and a system to help those who struggle to become better genealogists and at the same time better WikiTreers (a person who is a member of WikiTree).

How to join WikiTree

To join WikiTree just go to www.WikiTree.com and click join.

• You have the option of being a Guest, Family Member, or Wiki Genealogist. All of these member levels are free and will always be free.

• As a Wiki Genealogist we all sign the ‘WikiTree Honor Code’.

• Once you are a Wiki Genealogist, start adding limbs to our shared tree.

What about WikiTree & DNA?

When it comes to DNA, this aspect is one of the best attributes of WikiTree.

WikiTree does DNA differently. Instead of giving you lists of matches to sift through, it gives you ancestor profiles with DNA tested connections whose genealogy paper trails lead back to the ancestor.
