Sifting through the dirt in the garden, my eyes lit up in amazement. From the ground, I lifted out a tiny signet ring.

We lived in a two-bed terrace in Raynes Park, London, and it was there I’d first encountered the paranormal.

The house was odd. We often heard strange noises in the night, making it difficult for me to sleep. My mum Monica hated it too, especially when I brought strange objects in. ‘You’re bringing in the dead people,’ she’d say.

Then one day, aged 12, I was outside with my sieve, sifting through the dirt as I often did, when I saw the necklace. Wow! I thought. I knew Mum would be miffed if I showed her, so I sneaked it upstairs and placed it on my bedroom dresser. That night, I snuggled up in bed. But I’d barely drifted off before I was suddenly woken by muffled voices coming from downstairs.

I tiptoed down a couple of stairs, and peered through into the living room.

My eyes widened. I could see a man and woman arguing. And, even stranger, they were in old-fashioned clothes and looked like they were from the Edwardian era.
