Is the gift of second sight in your genes? We investigate whether psychic ability runs in families and can be handed down the generations
Psychic, Uri Geller, recently claimed his granddaughters, Romi, six, and three-year-old Liya, have inherited his incredible abilities. Not only do the children communicate with him telepathically, says Uri, who is best known for bending spoons with the power of his mind but, like him, they can also move objects by telekinesis.
‘Definitely, they are telepathic,’ Uri said of his daughter Natalie’s little girls. He told how he once witnessed Romi moving a glass of water without touching it, while Liya moved a cup in a restaurant while the family was out enjoying a meal.
‘They are mind readers, they are unbelievably intuitive,’ he added. ‘Other people are shocked by seeing their psychic demonstrations.’
Uri isn’t alone in believing spiritual gifts can be genetic. Many psychics say they come from a long line of clairvoyants, suggesting a widespread belief that psychic ability is hereditary. And although it’s never been scientifically proved, many experts also believe sixth sense can be inherited just like any other intellectual or physical trait.
Psychic medium, Lucy Bilton, says her ability was handed down through her mum Pat’s side of the family.
‘I was born with the gift, which I call my extra sense,’ Lucy says. ‘Mum tells me that even as a baby I would sit chatting to someone she couldn’t see. It wasn’t long mum before Mum recognised I had inherited her psychic ability, which she inherited from her mother, Minnie.’
But while Lucy’s mum was supportive of her daughter’s gift, it was a different story while Pat herself was growing up. Back then, seeing spirits was regarded as taboo.
Lucy says: ‘From a young age, Mum saw spirits at school and at home. However, she was told not to talk about it by her mother, who was terrified of the gift because several women on her side of the family ended up in asylums after telling people they could see spirits.
