SAVE OUR SUMMER!

As much as we may love being outdoors in the sunshine, it does have its drawbacks, and a day soaking up the sun can leave us reaching for both aloe vera and antihistamines. If you are fair-skinned and suffer from hayfever, it’s a double whammy of problems, but even for the most olive-skinned sun-savvy of us, it’s a good idea to have some sun saviours in your armour.

We love this season’s new range of eco-friendly suncare, especially Green People’s Organic Range for Sensitive Skin. It contains ocean-safe antioxidant-rich ingredients, such as myrhh, a powerful free-radical fighter and edelweiss, a natural UV-protection booster. Another favourite is Lavera’s range of Sensitive and Anti-ageing sun creams using organic sunflower and coconut oil.

With this year’s grass pollen season higher than ever before, we need all the help we can get with hayfever care too. Here’s a handy list of dos and don’ts for summertime blues…

DON’T stress if you haven’t had time to buy new suncare products this year. Most formulations have a shelf life of between two to three years.

DO cut back on caffeine during summer as it’s believed to increase your body’s histamine levels, therefore making hayfever symptoms more intense. Foods rich in vitamin C are natural antihistamines so bring on the berries and citrus fruits.

DON’T get stressed about UVC rays which emit the highest amount of energy of the three skin cancer-causing rays. UVC reacts with ozone high in the atmosphere so it doesn’t reach the ground.

DO reapply sunscreen regularly - even a supposedly once-a-day product. Research by Which? revealed some “once” products provide insufficient protection, so reapply a very generous amount of product every two hours.

DON’T rely on local honey for hayfever protection. As bees do not collect grass pollen - the main cause of hayfever, it’s a myth that their honey is a natural remedy.

DO treat hayfever symptoms three ways for maximum effect. Use antihistamine eye drops, such as (1.) Opticrom £4.70 hollandandbarrett.com; a non-sedating antihistamine tablet, such as (2.) Onea-day Hayfever and Allergy Relief tablets, £7.69, boots.com; and a hayfever relief nasal spray, such as (3.) Beconase, £7.99, chemist-4-u.com

LUXE FOR LIFE

Lockdown has certainly put our activewear wardrobes to the test, so it’s perfect timing to re-stock. The new collection from Hush features sports leggings, fitness bras, cropped tops, hoodies and stunning accessories in vibrant prints, sleek designs and high-performance fabrics. The company may be called Hush, but we reckon this is something to shout about.
