“As a young kid who’d just turned 17, making my senior debut for Wolves changed my life. I’d been called up to the first team a month beforehand in pre-season – I’d never played for the reserves; I went straight from the youth team into the first team. My mum and dad were at Carrow Road and I scored twice. The first was a left-footed volley from 20 yards, which was brilliant, and my second was a cheeky goal, skipping past a defender and poking the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs. Scoring a brace on my debut for Coventry two years later, after becoming the most expensive teenage signing by a British club, helped to put me on the map in the Premier League. But to do that on my Wolves debut was fantastic and gave me more confidence to kick on.”

June 5, 2002 World Cup “Playing at a World Cup was magical, and to score three goals made it extra special. I turned 14 midway through USA 94 and to watch that Ireland side was incredible, seeing how much joy they gave the nation. There were flags outside people’s houses, and everyone was running out on to the streets to celebrate Ray Houghton’s winning goal against Italy at Giants Stadium. Seeing that spurred me on to want to play at a World Cup finals one day, and I was really lucky to do that in 2002. We did so well in Japan and South Korea – we only lost against Spain on penalties in the last 16, a game I feel we probably should have won. Scoring the equaliser against Germany in the group stage, in the second minute of injury time, made me more recognised internationally.”
