Euro 2009 semi-final

“I was only 22 and still finding my feet at international level when Euro 2009 in Finland rolled around. I was used as a substitute to begin with and just tried to make an impression if called upon. That was the case against the Dutch in the semi-final. I came on early in extra time to replace the injured Jess Clarke – I probably would have remained on the bench otherwise – and headed in the winner shortly after. It was a huge relief and a wonderful moment for me. I wasn’t on the pitch for long, but that game was so important as we reached the final of a major tournament. I then started the final against Germany and they absolutely battered us 6-2, but we were all proud to have got there in the first place. My career went full circle, as I’d get my revenge against Germany...”

World Cup third-place play-off

“Reaching the last four of a World Cup was immense for the Lionesses – so many people encouraged us before the semi, which we lost in the last minute to Japan, and the third-place play-off against Germany. It’s always Germany! I remember being knackered after an exhausting tournament, and gazing at the clock to discover we’d only played half an hour! The game went to extra time and I could barely stand up, but we managed to find a bit more energy and won 1-0 to bag the bronze medal. It was a fantastic achievement for the girls. That summer really saw a surge in support for women’s football across the country, and the reception when we returned was incredible. Our efforts helped to pave the way for the success that followed over the next few years.”
