QUITE A VIEW The garden is full of fun details, from the coloured parasols along the back of the borders, to the topiary elephant in the middle
Planters and statues at the front of the tall raised bed blur its hard edges; seating areas are placed throughout so it’s possible to sit in the summer sun all day; ferns, bergenias (elephant’s ears) and hardy geraniums hide the edges of the steps; this chair has a tray of compost where the seat used to be, and is planted with ferns and podophyllum

There is a spirit of fun and enjoyment about the garden at 88 Brook Street. It is a garden of quirky sculptures, creative seating areas, vibrant containers and plentiful foliage. A garden to immerse yourself in in summer and make the most of every moment. “For us the garden is more than just the plants,” says Adrian. “We’re not what you’d call ‘gardener gardeners’, but we wanted to create an area that people could enjoy.” To maximise the enjoyment, there are a number of unusual seats dotted around.

“We move around in the evening to chase the sun down the garden,” adds Adrian. “We’ve added in lots of little features along the way – it’s more of a theatre than a garden. We had to describe it once and we said it was lush and quirky – like its owners!” The sense of theatre is created with a plethora of details to be discovered. A line of colourful parasols sweeps along the length of the garden’s main border. “Visitors always think we must have brought them back from our travels and I tell them yes, from our travels to Loughborough market!” Not all the seating in the garden is for relaxing in. An old chair is cleverly used to add detail to a shady corner, planted with shade-loving podophyllum and ferns, growing in a compost planting tray topped with moss.

There is a lushness about the whole garden that creates a special feel in summer. The part of the garden closest to the house is a shady area under an ash tree, so is planted appropriately with many of Adrian and Ita’s favourite ferns along with other shade-lovers, such as astrantia and hellebores to give a cooling, lush and leafy feel to the garden in the height of summer.
