THIS MONTH’S SHOWSTOPPERS
Acomplementary mix of FOLIAGE & FLOWERS
Pastel tulips, tree peonies and irises partner beautifully with a soothing background of textural greenery
Show gardens might be ephemeral constructs, but they offer a joyful dose of inspiration. The Constraining Nature garden won gold at RHS Malvern Spring Festival with its layer upon layer of greenery, rusted metalwork and elegant use of colour. It exploits the vertical as well as the horizontal, from multi-stemmed amelanchier to columns of hornbeams and a raised planter with dozens of shade-loving foliage plants. Even withou ta single flower this border would be rich in detail.
If you’re dealing with the shade of high boundaries then a similar planting of hostas, ferns, tellima and polygonatum would be the perfect way to green the space with plants that thrive in such conditions.
Colour can then arrive from amore sun-loving palette positioned to escape the gloom of the boundary, and they’ll look even better for having a foliage background to shine against.
