I’ve been struggling with peat-free composts. My seedlings germinated, but then failed to thrive when potted on. This year, I’ve cracked it. When the true leaf stage is reached, I mix 75% peat-free compost with 25% Westland well-rotted farmyard manure, and my seedlings are growing on strong and healthy.

Having bought plants in readiness for planting in tubs when the weather warms up, I’ve put them in the summer house. To protect them, I’ve used a square of muslin you can buy cheaply in the baby section at the supermarket. I find the size easier and more adaptable than cutting pieces of fleece.
