Give the garden a glow-up

Brighten up your outdoor space and get ready for the warmer weather with these quick and easy hacks…

1. KEEP ON TOP OF CONTAINERS

Big or small, pots and planters are the simplest way to add interest to an outdoor area without spending a fortune. Start by cleaning existing containers, getting rid of dead stems and old soil, before adding new linings and compost. Then repurpose and upcycle anything from buckets to bowls to grow flowers in, give old pots a makeover with paint, or try building your own planters from leftover decking.

2. GO POTTING

Create a dedicated potting area for all your new spring seedlings. Invest in a purpose-made potting bench – like this lovely sage green one, £249.99 from Gardenesque – make your own by upcycling a vintage chest or dresser, or build one from old palettes and protect it with colourful outdoor paint, such as Cuprinol Garden Shades, £16 per ltr at B&Q.

3. PIMP UP YOUR PATIO

Give plain pavers a whole new look with tile-style stencils. Clean the area with a scrubbing brush or pressure washer, letting it dry in the sun before using a specially-made stencil and masonry paint. For tips, inspo and a selection of stencils like this Painswick design from £3.20, check out The Stencil Studio.

4. INSTALL A FAUX LAWN

Transform your garden from drab to fab with artificial grass. With the right preparation, it’s easier to lay than you might think, says Carpetright's Sarah Hooper, who offers this step-by-step guide:

● First, check your garden for areas with poor drainage. If any pools of water stay for a long time after rainfall, get professional advice before you begin.

● Gather your tools: a sharp knife, knee pads, gloves, a tape measure, garden roller, turf cutter and broom.

● Prepare the base: it should be smooth, clean and level
