Good things
Presenter Anneka Rice shares the small things that bring her joy
MUM’S SHEPHERD’S PIE
My mother was a great home cook. Her shepherd’s pie was our go-to dish for big family get-togethers and is now our Christmas Eve, Easter and family gathering dish. With vegetarian options – Guinness and Cheddar, mash with leeks – you name it, I ring the changes! It’s utterly comforting and always made with love.
TRIPS TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT
I used to go on holiday to the Isle of Wight as a child. We’d pile into the family car, my father would light his pipe and we’d all sit in a fug of smoke until we finally tipped out. When I saw the sea, my heart would burst. Now, just getting the hovercraft across the Solent is utter therapy.
WATCHING THE RAILWAY CHILDREN
I was left to my own devices as a child and really identify with the children, especially Bobbie, who was a support to her mother and looked after her younger siblings. It’s been a source of real happiness to me. In fact, when Bernard Cribbins [who played Albert Perks] died, I presented a tribute to him on Radio 2.
MY FAMOUS JUMPSUITS
I’ve kept all my old Treasure Hunt jumpsuits and Challenge Anneka outfits, and I lend them to people for their hen nights! I decided to upcycle some of my old outfits for the new series of Challenge Anneka, so eagle-eyed fans will recognise various pieces.
HOME IMPROVEMENT
Living with me is like being in a never-ending episode of Changing Rooms. During lockdown, I became obsessed with dyeing things. You can throw bland whites and beiges into the machine with a tub of dye and watch them spin round and round as
