As we step into 2024, we’re taking the opportunity to bring you plenty of inspiration for the months ahead, with the hope you’ll enjoy a happier, healthier and better informed year as a result.

We’re bringing you this advice because it’s what you’ve told us you want, and we’ve been listening to you a lot of late – both in person at last autumn’s Good Housekeeping Live event and, more recently, in the form of two reader surveys, the details of which you can find in this issue (see pages 8 and 36). Your message is loud and clear: you’re very concerned about climate change and healthcare and, as you’re still doing the lion’s share of the housework, you want to know what new technology is being developed to help make your life easier.

This is where the brilliant Good Housekeeping Institute comes in. It’s the beating heart of this magazine and where our team of scientists and researchers work around the clock to test the latest innovations so we can tell you which ones perform best and are worth your money. Plus, 2024 is a very special year for the Institute as it celebrates its 100th birthday – a century of dedication to ensuring there should be ‘no drudgery in the house’, as my predecessor Alice Head put it back in 1924.

Of course, the types of devices we’re testing now are very different to those of 100 years ago and, with environmental concerns at the front of your minds, we’re launching a new GHI stamp to help you buy the best: the Good Housekeeping Institute Performance + Energy Efficiency logo. When you see it, you can be sure you’re buying an appliance that will perform well in addition to using less energy. It will soon start appearing on everything from washing machines to fridge freezers.
