A new season of Grand Designs is coming soon, and these are some of the exciting projects you’ll see in the coming weeks

Elevated backland build

LOCATION Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire GRAND DESIGNER Danny BEDROOMS 4 BATHROOMS 3 SIZE 160sqm INITIAL BUDGET £300,000 PLOT COST £0 ARCHITECT Kelly & MacPherson Architects (kellymac.co.uk) and Brown & Co (brown-co.com)

Grand Designer Danny, the deputy principal of a college, never knew his father growing up. Since becoming a dad himself, he wants to build his three children the ultimate treehouse home in the garden of his existing house. Steel stilts raise part of the building more than 10ft off the ground and a terrace extends out towards a small pond. The main challenge is Danny’s £300,000 budget, which is tight. Is it possible to build a sustainable four-bedroom home for this amount?

Woodland haven

LOCATION Henley, Oxfordshire GRAND DESIGNERS Tony and Ara BEDROOMS 6 BATHROOMS 7 SIZE 404sqm INITIAL BUDGET £800,000 PLOT COST £0 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER Nigel Hefferman

Health and wellbeing researcher Tony and Ara, a physiotherapist, inherited an idyllic woodland plot and Tony’s childhood home when his mother passed away. The couple’s plan to demolish his parents’ house and build a new home embodies their belief in the importance of healthy living and being close to nature. It’s also a haven for Ara, who suffers from various immune system disorders. But realising their dream requires living on a building site for two years.

Coastguard watchtower

LOCATION East Yorkshire GRAND DESIGNERS Zahid and Ferzana BEDROOMS 3 BATHROOMS 4 SIZE 153sqm INITIAL BUDGET £325,000 PLOT COST £175,000 ARCHITECT CRL Architects (crlarchitects.co.uk)

Zahid and Ferzana, who have three children, bought an obsolete coastguard station on a blustery Yorkshire headland. With their son Yusef on board as project manager, they plan to replace the dilapidated structure with a bold home. To capture the sea views, their house is a cantilevered glass-and-steel box that reminds the family of contemporary Japanese architecture. But the couple must juggle the demands of their jobs, which involve reinvigorating rundown shopping centres, and overcome the harsh coastal conditions before completing the project.
