There could barely have been a more apt song to soundtrack the reception for Sofia Richie’s lavish wedding to British record label boss Elliot Grainge in the South of France last week. The Good Charlotte song Lifestyles Of The Rich And The Famous was performed live, in fact, by Good Charlotte themselves (band member Joel Madden is married to Sofia’s sister Nicole Richie). They whipped the hordes of rich and famous guests into a frenzy as they filled the dance floor at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes – egged on by a barefoot Sofia, who joined the band on stage in a custom-made Chanel gown (a recreation of Claudia Schiffer’s 1997 corset dress).
The three-day event, reported to have cost $4 million, was a masterclass in breaking the internet. Sofia posted her first ever TikTok shortly after arriving at the hotel on Thursday 20 April, and drip-fed details of her dresses (the Chanel haute couture salons in Paris designed a trio of gowns for the rehearsal dinner, the ceremony and the reception), as well as make-up and jewellery options for each wedding event, earning herself almost a million followers in the process.
As the wedding happened, Sofia’s every sartorial choice for the weekend was dissected on TikTok and Instagram, and her elegant choices earned her some new fashion stripes – with many declaring her to be the It girl of the year, primed and ready to usurp Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid. Her influence has been immediate: demand for one of the beauty brands she wore on her wedding day, Nudestix, surged 2,400%.
We’re used to extravagant A-list weddings, of course. In the last 12 months alone we’ve seen coverage of J-Lo and Ben Affleck, and Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham’s big days. But the Richie-Grainge nuptials struck a different chord, for TikTok users especially.
