AFTER SPENDING THE past few weeks in a rotation of sequins, metallics and satin, you’ve earned a reprieve. What’s probably on your mind right about now is a) ever-more inventive recipes for leftover cheese and b) staying warm.

And you’re not alone. In fact, it’s never been hotter to wear thermals. And for the most reliable when temperatures drop to near sub-zero, it’s got to be Heattech, Uniqlo’s range of tops, leggings, hats, socks and even smart work trousers that is so popular that sales over the past 20 years have reached approximately 1.5 billion items worldwide.

Kanoko Takenokuchi, Uniqlo’s global managing director, explained that sales have been so strong in part because of the energ y crisis that drove a surge in demand for thermals. ‘Rocketing energ y prices last year were a prime factor in people choosing clothing that would keep them cosy through winter.’ In the UK, Ultra Warm, a range that is 2.25 times warmer than standard Heattech, accounted for 40% of sales this season.

For the uninitiated, Heattech is an ingenious thermal clothing technolog y that is thin, light, comfortable and made in collaboration with Toray Industries. It works by combining four fibres, which together absorb moisture, generate heat, create air pockets and maintain warmth, keeping you deliciously snug as well as dry. Clever, no? Fashion editors might not be famous for their practicality, but they still rave about Heattech.
