TROUSERS RARELY GET as many column inches as skirts – which rather smugly reflect the health of the economy via their very own hemline index – but they’ve become a hot topic of late. From how-low-can-you-go waistbands (turns out: very) to the ongoing domination of cargos, there’s been plenty to ponder when it comes to pants. The latest cur veball? The return of capris.

For anyone who missed the first revival in the early ’00s – repped by Rihanna – capris are slender in the leg and stop at the knee. Fitted and revealing more than a foot of bare calf, they’re not for the faint-hearted. Gigi Hadid sounded the whistle for the second renaissance last summer, stepping out in denim capris from Jacquemus. Paloma Elsesser then took up the mantle at Milan Fashion Week, appearing in a capri-leng th legging outside Ferragamo. And now, they’ve hit the high street.

Mango’s black capri leggings have almost sold out (luckily, the brand has another pair with side vents that’s still in stock). Zara has also backed capris, rolling out a classic black pair that finish a few inches below the knee with cute side vents, as well as alt versions in denim and picnic-blanket gingham. M&S’s cropped trousers (capris by any other name) have sold out in sand, pink and purple.
