FACEBOOK ALBUMS dedicated to your gap year probably included the following : tie-dyed trousers, armfuls of bracelets and shots of shots at full moon parties. And while we can’t go back to wearing glow-stick necklaces while drinking Sex on the Beach out of buckets, this summer’s muse is closer than you may think to your 18-year-old self.

Forget cottagecore, coastal grandmother and a stealth-wealth summer wardrobe of impeccable creams. Instead, your holiday alter ego finally has licence to have fun, with pieces that feel carefree (even if just last year they might have been deemed clichéd).

Essentially, what once felt consigned to the memories of your sun-kissed youth is back on the menu. First up, crochet, which has been given a serious glow-up at Rabanne, whose going-out top is a crocheted halter neck with silver beads and fringing that’s a knock-out with the matching peekaboo trousers. On the high street, John Lewis’s crocheted cardi – a collared style that could easily work for office hours – has almost sold out. Its similarly chic dress, however, hitting below the knee and with elongated sleeves, is still available and has an effortless vibe that means it could be paired with black slacks now and leather thongs later.

Speaking of sandals, Miu Miu has all but ensured that footwear will be souped up this summer, sending corded, crystallised sandals down the catwalk with chunky anklets that looked rather like climbing ropes and even neon toe plasters. Styled with bright board shorts and polos, it’s a look that’s playful, practical and anathema to anything overly polished.
