EVER SINCE SHE thanked all of her agents’ and managers’ assistants, aka ‘the people who answer my emails’, from the winner’s podium at this year’s Golden Globes, Ayo Edebiri has always delivered a side-order of personality, skewering the idea of a media-trained actor programmed to serve up bland soundbites. Take her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, who asked her to explain the next season of The Bear, which returns for its third outing on 27 June, without any spoilers. Taking the bait, Edebiri proceeded to fantasise about a crossover series with Shogun, the sweeping drama set in 17th century Japan, saying, ‘You have to watch it. It will make sense.’ She was side-stepping the obvious for some trademark playfulness – a pretty accurate description, it’s got to be said, of the formula when it comes to her fashion choices.
Together with her stylist Danielle Goldberg, Edebiri has managed to position herself, quite simply, as the real winner of the red carpet in 2024. In an era where so-called ‘method dressing’ has taken the step-and-repeat by storm post-Barbie – with actors wearing ‘on brand’ outfits to drum up as much hype as possible to spectacular but, dare we say it, rather samey effect (ie more pink) – it’s a refreshing step change to see a star’s personal style shine through.
