Brett Garsed is no stranger to GT’s pages but additionally the Australian fusion virtuoso has recorded/toured with big names like John Farnham and Nelson, plus fusion albums with guitarist T JHelmerich and several solo releases - busy!

For many, his impressive technique and improvisational ability is nothing short of mind-blowing as it creates a beautifully flowing and fluid sound. And while he’s a brilliant slide guitarist in standard tuning, it is his hybrid picking + legato technique that has cultivated much of his popularity.

Hybrid picking is the combination of using a pick with the picking-hand fingers and is often associated with country guitarists like Albert Lee. However, its technical versatility has become increasingly adopted in all genres for everything from chord picking through to high speed shred soloing. At the technique’s core is the smooth way of crossing strings quickly and often rather than using the pick alone. This in itself can yield some arresting licks involving wide intervals, string skipping and arpeggios with a warmer tone than just pick.

In this etude, Brett demonstrates two ascending and descending arpeggios based on Am9 (A-C-E-G-B) and E7b9 (E-G#-B-D-F) using hybrid picking and legato. Take this very slowly at first so you can accomodate his fretting-hand fingering and picking-hand directions carefully. Once mastered, it will sound amazing!
