Boss launched the flagship GT-1000 back in 2018 and, although we’ve had the GT-1000Core in the meantime, it feels like it’s time for a new model in the GT range. It’s now here, only this time it’s got a GX prefix. While in many ways the GX-100 is a streamlined and more cost-effective sibling to the GT-1000, what gives it the (G)X-factor is a full-colour touchscreen designed to make quick and easy work of editing.
Touchscreen aside, there’s plenty that’s familiar. Amp models and effects are derived from the GT-1000 and include 23 AIRD (Augmented Impulse Response Dynamics) amplifiers and more than 150 effects. There are 300 memory slots onboard, 100 of which hold factory presets, while the other 200 are user memories to save your own creations. Any one of these patches can have up to 15 blocks in a chain in any order, and there are options for creating parallel chains as well as serial.
The unit has extensive MIDI implementation, plus a USB connection for using it as an audio interface and for connecting to the editing software (Boss Tone Studio for Mac OS and Windows). There’s also the option of a Bluetooth connection if you buy and insert the adaptor (BT-Dual) to facilitate editing via a mobile app and streaming music to the unit, perhaps making use of the headphone jack for some silent playing along. Finally, you’ll find an onboard looper with 19 seconds of stereo sampling time (38 mono).
The GX-100 is robust, easily portable and ergonomically laid out at just the right size for most users
