Welcome to the very first issue of Gundog Journal, the UK’s only publication to dedicate its entire content to the world of working gundogs. We have cast the net wide to recruit a team of writers who know everything there is to know about the many working breeds. But it’s not all trials, dummies and working tests. Far from it in fact, as we are reaching out to the whole shooting community to reflect the sheer satisfaction which our gundogs deliver not only in the field, but in so many aspects of our lives. In these pages you will find features designed to reflect the different ways in which dogs add to our shooting life. Whether you are a Gun, beater, picker-up, host or just an enthusiast, you will find expert advice on how to train and care for your beloved companions, alongside a glut of thought-provoking comment and opinion on everything from scenting conditions to body language. And this is a broad church. We’re not all about labradors and spaniels; we strive to celebrate the sheer variety of gundog breeds which fill kennels and lay claim to chosen corners of sofas across the country – and overseas, for that matter. We hope this – Issue I of many – brings you the same sense of excitement you feel when your dog accomplishes a textbook retrieve at the end of a drive, or quarters neatly ahead of you in scent-filled cover. It’s a true celebration of man’s best friend.
