Do you know what’s so fetch? That, 20 years after Mean Girls first hit our screens, we’re about to once again wear pink on a Wednesday to watch the latest iteration of Tina Fey’s masterpiece –afilm musical, no less. Here’s what to expect…

As Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of So Fetch: The Making Of Mean Girls, explains, the 2004 movie –starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried – has never stopped gainingfans, mainly thanks to the internet.

“As social media’s prevalence grew in the years after Mean Girls’ release, so did the film’s presence in culture. It became one of the internet era’s first cult hits,” she explains. Such acult hit that, 14 years after its cinematic debut, Mean Girls earned aspot on Broadway in 2018 as a stage show. Also set to open in London’s West End in June this year, the musical has now inspired abrand-new film, which will be hitting UK cinemas on 17 January.

BRAND-NEWTWIST

This time around, we’ll be following Angourie Rice’s Cady Heron as she adapts to life at North Shore High School after aspell of homeschooling and travel. As per the original, it isn’t long before she’s recruited into the Plastics – aka the cool clique, made up of Regina George (Reneé much to the frustration Rapp), Karen Shetty (AvantikaVandanapu), and Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood). This is much to the frustration of her outsider pals, JanisIan and Damian Hubbard (Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey), but, when Cady triggers queen-bee Regina, they come back together as atrio to take down the Plastics. So, expect quintessential high-school bitchiness, underhand moves andAaronSamuels (Christopher Briney) breaking hearts.

As well as the return of Cady and the Plastics (who we love to hate), this musical film version pays homage to ample Mean Girl staples, namely the burn book and signature sayings, “Get in, loser” and “I’m sorry that people are so jealous of me”. But while we obvs want to see those iconic moments all over again, the new movie – directed by Samantha Jayneand Arturo Perez Jr in their feature film directorial debut –will bring its own spin. As screenwriter Tina – who is also reprising her role as Ms Norbury – said, “We’ve brought a brand-new twist to the franchise that I hope fans both old and new will enjoy.”
