THE RISE & RISE OF GILLIAN ANDERSON

The award-winning star is set for even more acclaim when new film Scoop arrives

No sweat: Gillian as Emily Maitlis and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew
She’s awesome

Prepare to have your mind blown on 5April when new movie Scoop lands on Netflix. The film recreates the real-life drama surrounding Prince Andrew’s infamous interview with BBC presenter Emily Maitlis in 2019, when he attempted to defend himself from accusations of sexual misconduct (which he denies) by banging on about Woking Pizza Express and not sweating.

Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat)plays the challenging part of the Prince, but from what we’ve seen so far, the truly remarkable performance comes from Gillian A nderson as steely journo Emily. Having shown how astonishingly accurate her portrayal of areal-life figure can be when she played Margaret Thatcher in The Crown, her turn as the former Newsnight host might just be the crowning glory of an amazing career.

SHE’S OUT THERE

The US-born star, 55, first rose to fame in the early 1990s when she starred in hugely popular sci-fi drama The X-Files along with David Duchovny. With the tagline, “The truth is out there”, the show revolved round FBI paranormal investigators Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson).

The duo quickly achieved iconic status and the show ran for nine seasons and spawned two spin-off movies. Gillian deservedly won myriad awards, including aBest Actress Emmy, for her portrayal of unflappable scientist Scully.

STELLA ROLE

When The X-Files ended in 2002, Gillian moved to London and took on an array of major roles on stage and screen, including acclaimed work in two big BBC Dickens adaptations –Bleak House and Great Expectations –but it wasn’t until 2013 that she found another recurring TV drama role that proved to be as memorable as her X-Files work.

In the BBC thriller series The Fall, Gillian played maverick detective Stella Gibson, whose nemesis was twisted serial killer Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan. Her hunt for Spector lasted three powerful series from 2013 and 2016, and Gibson was the perfect role for Gillian –aself-assured woman who refused to play by the rules both in her professional and personal lives.
