THE COMEDIAN ON WHY SHE’S A GREAT ‘DAD’

“Just call me Daddy”

The last time we caught up with Katherine Ryan, she’d not long welcomed her third child Fenna, which resulted in her revealing that her breasts had developed a “toxic relationship” with each other. While there are no anatomy-based revelations this time, the Canadian UK-based comedian, 40, does give us her take on ideal dates, the taboos on discussing sex (husband Bobby Kootstra is impressed how often she mentions it), and what it’s like raising her three kids, Violet, 14, Fred, two, and 15-month-old Fenna…

How is the classic “mum juggle” going?

I’m getting better at embracing my role as a “dad”. I was always thinking to myself, “If I leave my kids with the babysitter, or if I leave my kids with my husband, that makes me a terrible mother”. But I started thinking, “Well, actually, I’m a dad. I’m really hands-on, Icome home every night, I’m not cheating on anyone, I’m never in abad mood, I’m not gambling, I’m not drinking, Iearn money, my kids love me, I’m home all the time, Icook, clean, and do laundry when Ican… I’m agreat dad”. Ithink anyone who’s like, “Oh, I’m a terrible mum”, you’re not.

You’re just a great dad.

What’s your stance on putting your children on social media?

I’m very mindful about what Ipublish with my children, and Ithink I’ve got abalance that works for our family. I share some photos of them –I think they’re so cute! But even the last six months, as they’ve developed their own personalities, I’ve pulled back alittle bit. I feel like every baby kind of looks like a baby.

Would you like to expand the family?

Katherine is saying no to showbiz date nights like this

We’re in a real sweet spot of life now and I think that it’s dangerous, because it’s making me feel like, “Oh, I have my life back a little bit, [let’s] leave things the way they are.” But also they’re so cute. And [the baby stage] happens so fast that I’m like, “Oh, I’ll have another one. It’s just another ten months of chaos, and then it’ll get good again.” I’m fighting logic with biology at the minute.

How often do you and Bobby get to spend time together?
