When it comes to reality shows and light entertainment, there’s a certain snobbery in the TV industry. Sure, we love a well-crafted, compelling, prestige drama as much as the next person, but we also thoroughly enjoy a fun, frivolous, easy watch. Basically, we just want to be entertained, and we don’t mind how it’s done.

So, we were thrilled to hear that one of our fave actors, David Tennant, is eschewing any potential hang-ups about what’s highbrow and what’s not to head up a new game show, which will see him take on the omnipotent-sounding role of “The Creator”. Sounds right up our street!

GENIUS IDEA

Kudos to ITV for signing such a big name – and for teasing the exciting news earlier this month, in a suitably brain-scrambling fashion. Posting a blurry picture of the host on X, they gave a cunning code to crack, with each number corresponding to a letter in the alphabet, which spelt out AADDEINNNTTV – an anagram of David Tennant. Clever! It was then announced that the former Doctor Who would be overseeing the “smartest reality show on TV”, a quiz as fiendishly complex as the Tardis itself. Adapted from the South Korean show, The Genius Game sees skilled players – chosen not just for their mental intellect, but also their social IQ and charisma – competing against each other in tests of analytical reasoning, attention to detail, memory, and loyalty in the ultimate battle for survival. Thrillingly, in a move reminiscent of our TV obsession The Traitors, the players must forge alliances and work out who to trust – and who to betray – in order to survive and get their mitts on a cash prize of up to £50K.
