Style solutions

As the mercury drops, wardrobes need to adapt. Stay toasty, without any sartorial compromise

1. HOMESPUN SCARVES

Our accessories motto for AW23: if it doesn’t look like Mrs Weasley knitted it for you, we’re afraid we’re not interested. Big billowing scarves in rainbow shades engulfed models on the Etro runway, while Burberry’s snuggly offerings matched co-ordinating suiting in mustard yellow and bright cobalt checks.

Scarf, £130, Samsøe Samsøe

2. HAIRY HATS

Bucket, £50, Arket

Gargantuan fuzzy hats have donned the heads of society’s notable sexpots; Pamela Anderson and Rihanna are fans. So, channel your inner bombshell like Emili Sindlev (left), while protecting your hair from drizzle. Your grandad might not get it, but he’ll be pleased you’re nice and warm.

Blazer, £210, Aspiga
Trousers, £135, American Vintage

Jacket, £130, Anthropologie
Jacket, £149, Marks & Spencer
Bag, £995, Stella McCartney
Coat, £389, Baum und Pferdgarten

A time-travelling caveman might be bemused by Coach’s slick metallic versions for AW23 or Blumarine’s mini skirts, but we reckon he’d have a soft spot for Givenchy’s eternally classic jackets.

PUT A SOCK ON IT – NOT IN IT!

5. COLOURED TIGHTS

Solve the problem of chilly legs without resorting to a 40 denier black pair of tights, aka the dullest item of clothing we all have stashed in our underwear drawer. Overhaul your hosiery collection and introduce a splash of colour or pattern fit for Paris Fashion Week.

Patterned, £260, La DoubleJ

6. PADDED GILETS

Favoured by Henry VIII and dog walkers alike, the gilet is humble in origin and was a style adopted by French peasants trying to keep their bodies warm, while leaving the arms free for tilling fields, drinking mead and such like
