MARTINA NAVRATILOVA

Tennis legend beats cancer for a second time

Tennis icon Martina Navratilova has announced she is “cancer-free” after revealing she feared she “may not see next Christmas”, having been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer last year.

Speaking on TalkTV’s Piers Morgan Uncensored last week, the 66-year-old former world No. 1, who survived breast cancer in 2010, said she will be “good to go” after receiving further preventive radiation treatment. “As far as [the doctors] know, I’m cancer-free,” she said.

Speaking in January, the 18-time Grand Slam singles winner, who first noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck last November, said she was staying “positive”. “The double whammy is serious but fixable and I’m hoping for a favourable outcome,” she said at the time.

GWYNETH PALTROW

Appears in court accused of ‘reckless’ skiing

Gwyneth Paltrow has appeared in court after being accused of “reckless” skiing that led to a collision at a Utah resort in 2016. A court in the US state heard the Iron Man actress, 50, was “distracted” when she crashed into retired optometrist Terry Sanderson, 76, causing injuries including brain damage and four broken ribs.

The doctor is suing the Oscar-winning actress for $300,000 (£245,000) in damages, while Gwyneth has countersued for $1, plus legal fees.

Her lawyer Steve Owens said she had been descending the slope when a man skied into her from behind. “Gwyneth was hurt by Mr Sanderson’s negligence… It rattled and physically hurt her,” he said.

The trial is scheduled to end on 30 March.

ANGELA KELLY

Honour for Queen’s dresser

The Queen’s closest aides were among those receiving honours in a special Queen’s Demise list announced last week. Angela Kelly, personal assistant, adviser and curator to the late monarch, is made Commander of the Victorian Order, along with Her Majesty’s trusted page Paul Whybrew and head groom Terry Pendry, who stood with her beloved Fell pony Emma to watch the cortege go past in Windsor after the Queen’s funeral last September.

Among her ladies-in-waiting on the list, Philippa de Pass and Jennifer Gordon Lennox become Dame Commanders of the Victorian Order. Military and Government personnel who took part in the funeral, including those who pulled the State Gun Carriage, are also honoured.
