I t is the world’s most fashionable event, with stars dressing in haute couture to strike a pose on the red carpet. And this year, as A-listers including Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman arrived at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala, there was one very popular accessory: a baby bump.

Former tennis champion Serena Williams chose the annual event to reveal that she and husband Alexis Ohanian will be welcoming a second child this year.

Dressed in a simple black-and-white Gucci gown with rows of pearls, Serena proudly displayed her growing figure to the rows of photographers.

The couple, who are already parents to five-year-old Olympia, later confirmed their happy news on Instagram, with Serena writing: “Was so excited when [Vogue editor in chief and gala organiser] Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”

Model Karlie Kloss, dressed in Loewe, and her husband Joshua Kushner also chose the gala to unveil a new baby bump. “This is the most important night in fashion, of course, and I’m honestly surprised I could keep it a secret this long,” said Karlie, who has son Levi, two, with Joshua.

STYLISH TRIBUTES

With this year’s theme being Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, in honour of Chanel’s long-time creative director, who died in 2019 at the age of 85, many guests chose to include the designer’s trademark monochrome, floral appliqués or pearls in their outfits.

Following the floral theme, Rihanna made a showstopping entrance in a dramatic three-dimensional, camellia-covered, white hooded cape by Valentino, especially designed for her by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.

She later undid the cape to reveal a tight white dress with a floral neckline – and her own baby bump.

The singer and beauty mogul was joined by boyfriend A$AP Rocky, who wore a custom Gucci outfit of black blazer and jeans, over which he added a long tartan kilt.

The couple, who welcomed their first child, a son, last May, looked more in love than ever as they walked into the venue.

Rihanna and her beau weren’t the only ones enjoying a date night at the gala, which included a cocktail hour, dinner, a tour around the museum’s Karl Lagerfeld exhibition and a surprise performance from US musician Lizzo.
