After ten weeks of sweet treats, surprises and showstoppers, TV show The Great British Bake Off crowned its newest winner last week – and it was Matty Edgell who came out on top.

The self-proclaimed “underdog” of Channel 4’s baking competition was all smiles as he lifted the coveted glass cake stand, having fended off competition from finalists Josh Smalley and Dan Hunter. But that’s not all he had to celebrate.

SLICE OF LUCK

The icing on the cake of the 28-year-old PE and science teacher’s triumph is that he is marrying fiancée Lara next June – and so his next culinary assignment will be to make his own wedding cake.

“I loved being in the tent, and another of my happiest life moments was when I got engaged in Sorrento to my fiancée Lara,” said the smiley star from Peterborough of his romantic proposal, which was announced at the end of the final episode.

“I’m not sure what’s next for me, but my next big baking project is making our wedding cake. I am just going to keep enjoying it.”

For ten weeks, he battled it out on the benches with his fellow contestants (left, from left) Josh, Dan, Keith, Rowan, Nicky, Amos, Abbi, Saku, Dana, Matty, Cristy and Tasha

In fact, it was Lara’s belief in her partner that got Matty onto the show; she filled out an application for him. In a heart
