England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham ends an “amazing 24 hours”

Asquad of sporty superstars took to the winner’s podium at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, with former heptathlete Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill flying the flag for the British contingent.

The 38-year-old mum of two, who won gold at the 2012 London Olympic Games, radiated Barbie-chic in a hot-pink dress from Solace London to see some of 2023’s greatest and most inspirational sportsmen, women and teams honoured.

Topping the list was England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, who became the first footballer to win the award for Breakthrough Player of the Year.

BACK OF THE NET

A key player for the Spanish club since joining last year, Jude, 20, has had a phenomenal season, scoring 21 goals in 36 games before the awards, including the winning shot against Barcelona the previous night.

“It’s been an amazing 24 hours and a bit of a mad crazy week, so I’m a bit tired now,” he said. “To be here with so many amazing athletes and inspirational people is a real pleasure, and then to win something is even more special.”

Also enjoying a night to remember, tennis star Novak Djokovic got his fifth Sportsman of the Year title after winning three Grand Slams in 2023.

“I am incredibly honoured to have won,” said the 36-year-old. “I think back to 2012, when I won it for the first time as a 24-year-old. I am very proud to be here 12
