It has always been the highlight of their summer calendar, but Royal Ascot took on a special significance for the royal family last week, when they were reunited following the most difficult of times.

The King and Queen looked thrilled to be joined by their relatives at the Berkshire racecourse, and the extended family appeared more united than ever as they let their hair down together for the first time in months.

After the turbulence of the past year, the strong bond between them was clear to see – the royals exchanging warm hugs, laughter and tactile shows of public support in a way we have never seen before.

His Majesty, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, looked happy and relaxed as he laughed and chatted to his wife in the Royal Box.

The annual event – the premier flat-racing festival of the year – was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, and Their Majesties, who inherited her stable of thoroughbreds, certainly seemed to be embracing the occasion.
