Decking is a great choice for a garden design, as it’s easy to install and look after, while also giving you plenty of options of styles, colours and more. It can transform large gardens and small plots alike, and there are plenty of low-maintenance options when it comes to creating this popular feature. Decking can also be a smart solution in sloping plots, where a traditional paved patio can be tricky to install. Opting for a raised deck can be an effective way of linking different levels in the garden, creating a flexible, multifunctional entertaining space.

Whether you go for a traditional timber decking or a modern composite version, there are so many clever ways of introducing it to your space. Composite decking can be stylish, durable and add lasting appeal to your garden. Reassuringly, some composite manufacturers are also taking steps to ensure their composite decking products are increasingly eco-friendly, using a high percentage of recycled plastic.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Most gardens are designed with some form of border separating them from the house. Whether yours is a patio or a decked area, there is no denying that a deck can provide a clean border between the garden’s greener areas and any other zones attached to the house.

“Outdoor decking provides a stylish element to your outdoor space. Building a deck works well for any garden, regardless of the size and provides an attractive and practical aspect to your garden,” says Christopher Ray, head of merchandising at B&Q.

“When choosing your decking, you will need to consider how it will aesthetically match with your existing exterior,” adds Nick Whiley, project director at Trekker Global. “You will also need to consider how much time you think you can allocate to looking after and maintaining your decking.”

“If you are planning a raised deck, you will need to consider the best location to include steps in your design, too,’ says Allan Jeffrey, founder of Ultra Decking. “Your installer can help you to decide on the best options and discuss how the substructure will support both the steps and your decking area.”

Decking doesn’t just have to be used around the house, either, but can extend into the garden to create other areas to sit. What’s more, it’s a great way to zone a particular area, such as a seating or dining space, helping it to feel contained and cosy, even in a large garden.

MATERIAL OPTIONS

“If your aim is to create a more spacious outdoor area, try opting for traditional timber decking as they suit all types of projects and are great for raised or large decks,” says Chris
