Folk tale

The interior designers behind Studio HÁM are brother and sister Tom and Kate, whose style combines antique furniture and classic upholstery in modern colour palettes. For their first foray into wallpaper they have collaborated with Dado Atelier on four designs that reference motifs found in folk art.

Frill seekers

What to Buy Now JIM PARTRIDGE PIECES

Philip Smith, Lyon & Turnbull

In our last Modern Made sale, we offered 22 lots by the Shropshire-based artist cabinetmaker, Jim Partridge (1953-), including some cutting-edge pieces made for British textile artist Ann Sutton in the 1980s. Double Seat, c1984, a two-seat plank bench made from saw-cut scorched green oak – Partridge’s signature material – sold for £5,040, while a warped stool, also 1984, made £3,024. The maker recently described these pieces as pioneers of ‘a new language of woodworking’, adding: ‘Their surface texture comes straight from the saw milling.’ An egg rack and a toast rack sold for £819 and £693 respectively, while six turned bowls were bought for £1,764. Jim’s work is already in the V&A, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Manchester Art Gallery.

BLUE BEAUTY

Lapicida’s Maiolica Blue collection captures the timeless and vibrant designs of traditional majolica pottery, as well as its practicality. The method involves coating pre-fired clay with opaque base glazes, onto which bright designs are then painted before a second firing.
