elcome to the Christmas issue of H&A! With the big day creeping ever closer, our columnists delve into the traditions of festive entertaining and the history of the dinner party. Turn to page 82 for Luke Honey’s gallop through time, from the Roman roots of Christmas feasting to the emergence of formal table settings. On page 84, Celia Rufey unpicks the story of fine table linens, while Willa Latham talks us through the ins and outs of elaborate dinner services (p87), and offers guidance on buying and caring for fine porcelain. If you are seeking inspiration for your own Christmas table, turn to page 37, where you will find lots of clever ideas for simple decorative touches to pair with your favourite antiques. This month’s houses, from page 45, have a distinctly festive air, full of pretty decorations, fresh greenery, and lots of twinkling candlelight. The latter is, of course, the perfect foil for the owners’ antiques, from brass candlesticks and simple country furniture to gleaming ginger jars and old portraits. Although quite different in style, all four homes prove that if you buy the antiques you love, regardless of value or fashion, it’s possible to create interiors that are characterful and unique, as well as being sustainable and affordable, too.Our collecting guides, from page 90, cover antique cookery books, cocktail watches and advertising posters, all of which would make wonderful presents. For more gift ideas, turn to our guide (p29), or check our listings at the back of the magazine for your nearest fairs and auctions – both are brilliant sources of unique gifts, whatever your budget!
