Writing this letter with a heavy frost outside, and plunging temperatures across the country, it’s hard to imagine the end of winter. But looking over this month’s issue has been a cheering reminder that spring is not far away.

Our shopping section (p13) offers a lovely selection of contemporary tulipieres, inspired by the fabulous vases created for mass displays of once-priceless single stems. I love the fact that this historic design remains popular, even though tulips are no longer a rarified indulgence. Our decorating section (p16) focuses on cosy, tactile fabrics and textured wallpapers, bridging the gap between the seasons in their soothing neutral shades. And the Owletts Bench, featured in Object of Desire (p21), looks ahead to days spent in the garden.

This month’s antiques content covers many specialisms, from oriental ceramics (p19) to campaign furniture (p24). Turn to page 79 to learn more about John Ogilby’s extraordinary ribbon-like maps – the sat nav of their day! Luke Honey sings the praises of the typewriter on page 86 and, in her new column on antiques linked to specific towns and regions, Janet Gleeson charts the story of Sunderland lustre (p93).

Elsewhere, in our first UK Fairs Special (p69) we present a survey of the key events for the year ahead. Fairs are such a rewarding way to buy antiques, allowing you to build relationships with dealers, expand your knowledge, and develop a sense of where your interests lie. Fairs also offer an excellent opportunity for travel, both here and abroad, as Caroline Wheater discovered on her trip to TEFAF in Maastricht (p98) – a city that is now at the top of my travel wishlist!
