We all have our own ideas about what makes a great interior, whether our style tends towards a clean, pared-back minimalism or a joyful clash of bold colours and maximalist patterns. However, there’s a reason people pay interior designers, and if you’d like to learn some of the experts’ rules and secrets to help you plan a room that you’ll love – or even if you’d like to take your learning further – there’s a course out there for you. Create Academy has a raft of online courses that provide a good starting point. These expert-led programmes range from the comprehensive and all-encompassing, like Rita Konig’s 36-lesson Ultimate Guide to Interior Design (£147), to the more specific, such as 24 lessons from Amanda Lindroth on Designing Interiors for Entertaining (£127) or Miles Redd’s Learn to Design Dramatic Interiors (£147), and more besides. The lessons include help with establishing your own style, layouts, colours, buying guides, and pretty much all other aspects of design.
Learning with Experts has another online option that makes for a good introduction to the subject: Interior Design: Finding the Colours & Patterns You Love (£45–£125) from Tricia Guild and the Designers Guild design studio offers an overview that aims to teach its students how to establish a personal style, building a design project as you learn.
Alongside its diploma and degree courses, the National Design Academy in Nottingham also runs a couple of shorter online courses, like Interior Design for Your Home (£250), with lessons based around five projects, covering key interior design principles to give you the confidence to design any room in your home.
