Luminous sunset shades and earthy terracottas and ochres are perfect partners and versatile, too, as they can be sophisticated and seductive or fabulously fresh

WARM GLOW
A sleek sofa upholstered in two tonal fabrics shines in this luxe scheme, which is made all the more sophisticated with a backdrop of heavy drapes and a large-scale patterned rug. Blazer wool satin fabric (curtains), £166m; Bauhaus rug, £5,270, both Nobilis
DOWN TO EARTH
For a long time, painted walls in cool whites and greys have dominated interiors but warmer hues are competing. Greys are still around but now we’re often seeing these as secondary shades, as shown here in the upholstered furniture and the marble of the fireplace with a confident earthy pink dominating on both the walls and woodwork. To bridge the gap between the rich earthy walls and cool greys, complementary colours have been introduced to balance the pink, such as the red in the flatweave rug and the orange accessories.
WARM PAINT HUES
DESERT OASIS
Treat striped fabric as a neutral to balance more elaborate patterns, such as a chequered rug – both pattern styles are graphic which gives the scheme an edge. The pale base of the curtain fabric features a fine deep beige stripe alongside a bold ochre stripe which picks out the colours used in the rug. While the raw wood side table, plaster pendant light and leather occasional chair complement the whole palette. Aveiro fabric from the Costa Nova collection, £91.50m, Casamance
TROPICAL DELIGHT
Introduce texture with a cork-based wallpaper design; this example from Pierre Frey features rotary printed stylised tropical foliage which gives a rustic quality. Wooden furniture and accessories in different hues continue the natural theme – layer in scatter cushions in an array of sunset colours to create an inviting space. For the floor, a rug isn’t necessary as this is a summer scheme, but if you do want to introduce more colour try terracotta stone tiles.
