MEET THE MAKER Barny Lee @barnyleedesign

Growing up I learnt woodwork from my father who would make me and my siblings amazing bunk beds and desks. I was very particular about where these should be positioned in our bedroom and have enjoyed designing layouts ever since. I studied joinery on sites in London then fine-furniture making in Scotland before moving to Bali to make furniture from the beautiful reclaimed teak there. Since then, I have had my workshop in West Sussex for over 15 years, producing high-end furniture and bespoke joinery.

It sounds contrived to say that I’m inspired by all the different shapes around me all the time and how they interplay. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a car park or a cupboard, there will always be some proportional intrigue there to absorb, at the very least.

I love making shapes that create an emotional response in people; be it the shapes that lighting creates in a room or a piece of furniture that becomes a focal point and sets a mood. Working with wood in particular is such a life-giver.

The trompe l’œil artwork of @christopheropage and sculpture of @clementinekeithroach should be seen instead of poorly described by me. Also, @thomas_ hutton’s alabaster lamp sculptures are stunning.
