‘The Shaker-style kitchen has that vintage vibe I love, but it’s also a classic design that has always felt current. We recently gave it another refresh by painting the doors,’ says Nikki. The pink microwave is from Dunelm

My story

I’ve loved the Art Deco aesthetic since I was a child. I find the glamour and elegance from that era really inspiring so it was always going to feature in my home, but I also wanted to celebrate the Victorian heritage of this house.

When we moved in, it was a two-up two-down with a space in the loft that hadn’t been fully converted. The whole house was beige and featureless, so I began adding character by installing a reproduction Victorian fireplace in the living room. We also filled in the open space under the stairs with three big cupboards. This was not only to create much-needed storage, but also to contain the dining area and make the living room cosier.

It takes time and money to renovate a home but over the years we added the kitchen extension by using the side return and opening up a wall into the dining area. We’ve also extended the loft room to create a master bedroom with a luxurious en suite and dressing area. And we decorated the bathroom and living room with my colourful maximalist style, although there is a pink-and-green thread running throughout which adds flow and cohesion.

Every room has had an update or two, but it has always included colour and pattern, and a large dose of fun! I love my home and I’m so pleased that it’s a true reflection of everything I love about interiors.

'Top of my wish list was a butler’s sink and I’ve paired it with this pink tap from Dowsing & Reynolds’

‘Before we’d even moved in, I’d drawn all over the estate agent’s floorplan showing exactly what changes I wanted to make; extending the small, original galley kitchen and adding a conservatory onto the back. And rather than include an island, I decided to keep the space open as we love a kitchen disco! I chose cream Shaker-style units as I wanted a kitchen that was timeless, which worked as we’ve had the kitchen for 10 years now and it’s not dated. When I wanted a refresh recently, we simply painted the doors rather than replace the whole kitchen. I love a pink-and-green colour combo – it adds such a fresh, fun vibe.
