Inspired by the luxurious feel of boutique hotels, Frederique Pope put her own quirky spin on the term ‘en suite’
ADDING A BATH IN OUR BEDROOM
This space was originally two rooms – a separate bedroom and a particularly unpleasant bathroom next door that was ready for a complete update. We wanted to inject a boutique hotel vibe into the space but with our own creative twist, and including a bath was top of our wish list. We decided to knock down the adjoining wall to create a large open-plan room, and we initially thought we’d have time to carefully plan the renovation. But then the country went into lockdown, which meant home-schooling our children, so the whole process became a lot harder.
Luckily, we were able to find a group of builders who were allowed to work together to do the reno. I created a moodboard to hone my ideas, which included the yellow free-standing bath – the starting point for the look – then the gold claw feet, which led the way for the opulent fixtures and fittings. I worried about water damage so had tiles cut into the floorboards around the bath as a good-looking and practical solution. We also had a window seat, shelves and a wardrobe built-in to add plenty of storage so that we didn’t need to fill the room with furniture.
We both love the bold contrast between teal and yellow so we chose Vardo by Farrow & Ball for the walls, woodwork and ceiling. Having the super-sized four-poster bed custom-built to fit all five of us was the finishing touch, and now it’s a joy to all snuggle down together and enjoy our quirky bedroom.
