1 Pick a small palette and stick to these colours

Sticking to a palette of three colours, using the 60%, 30%, 10% rule, is a useful way to ensure that whatever patterns you choose – whether stripes, florals, spots or squiggles – have a coordinated feel rather than fighting with each other. Try using a statement wallpaper as a starting point, choosing the dominant colour in its design for your furniture, paint and curtains. Then select a secondary shade from the wallpaper and work this into your scheme with smaller patterned pieces such as cushions, throws, rugs and artwork. The third colour is your accent shade and can be used in other soft furnishings, or smaller accessories like picture frames or candlesticks, tying the whole look together for pattern perfection. Of course, you don’t need to use wallpaper as your inspiration – a favourite fabric design or painting could be the catalyst for your chosen colour palette.
