3 SECRETS TO THIS SCHEME
MODERNIST MOVEMENT
Tropical Modernism is an architectural style that developed in West Africa in the 1940s. After independence from British colonial rule, India and Ghana adopted the style as a symbol of their hopes for the future. It combines the clean-lined structure of European modernism with local motifs and adaptions to suit warmer climates – such as ‘brise soleils’ which are perforated concrete screens, used to allow breezes to enter buildings while deflecting bright sunlight.
GO FOR GEO
Mimic the patterns of brise soleils by choosing geometric prints. Look out for strong, graphic styles with small repeats, so that the effect is richly detailed.
WARM IT UP
Use shades of earth and stone to bring warmth to your scheme. Pick a dark tone to use as your ‘shadow’, a lighter shade as a mid-tone, and an off-white for highlights.
