as a child, I lived in a 1930s house with large sash windows and double-aspect rooms. My mother used to say how lucky we were to live in a space that was drenched in light. She loved our family home and never wanted to move because she said that we’d never find another house as bright and airy. She and my father lived there from the day they were married to the day they died and my mum never fell out of love with her home.

I always think of her words and how light has such a positive effect on our wellbeing – and it’s a big focus in this month’s issue. Take a look at our reader houses (from p53) and you’ll see what I mean: some have sea views, some are full of colour, but each is filled with light and it must be a treat to live somewhere so bright and airy.

Speaking of brightness, the sunnier months are always the best time of year to rethink your windows and how you dress them – with the longer days, you want to make the most of the light and we’ve pulled together some of our favourite treatments for every kind of window (see p28).
