Converting two unmodernised flats into a family home was just the start of the renovation project undertaken by Chris Trotman and Anna Burles that transformed their Victorian London property. Once this had been done, they were able to apply for planning permission to build into the side return and create a three-room loft extension that would give them the fantastic five-bedroom, three-bathroom home they now live in.

Starting in August 2020, the work was completed in February 2021 and was a design-build collaboration with the couple’s long-time construction partners, JNJ Building Services. The team gutted the ground floor completely and reconfigured the layout, removing the front living/dining room and replacing it with a small living room and utility/guest bathroom, and then creating a large open-plan family space at the rear.

‘Our builders were fabulous, maintaining momentum, but also respecting our passion for creativity,’ says Anna. ‘As we’re designers, we knew how to push things and be innovative and daring, so we let our imaginations run wild. The concept is very personal to us and we spent our evenings and weekends developing and refining the design.’
