Christine Garder had been living alone in her one-bedroom apartment just outside Copenhagen for some time when her boyfriend Frederik Johan Rørvold-Jørgensen moved in, so they decided to change things around a bit. First they swapped the bedroom and living room and created a home working area. Then they had to scale down the furniture to make everything fit; this included replacing the dining table with a smaller one from Ikea, which they customised with a tiled surface and brass hairpin legs, and investing in a space-saving bench that tucks neatly underneath when not in use.

But it’s Christine’s passion for buying vintage homeware that has had the biggest impact on the apartment. It’s now home to a wonderful mix of furniture teamed with colourful china, stained glass and vibrant art, plus Christine’s own homemade ceramics. To make space for more finds – Frederik in particular tries to hold on to the principle of ‘one thing in, one thing out’ – the couple began to sell homeware online. This has now turned into a successful store, Farveladeland.com, which they run together as well as holding down full-time jobs.

‘I’ve always been interested in vintage objects that are colourful and a bit different,’ says Christine. ‘Perhaps it’s a reaction to the fact so many people around me were collecting Royal Copenhagen porcelain.
