Love a little contemporary cool or prefer a classic look? Why not go for a bit of both? Mix and match to your heart’s content from the hottest trends around and create something rather amazing that works just for you

1 THE UPDATED SOFA SILHOUETTE

Hendrix sofa bed in Soft Cord Neutral, £599; Curve armchair in Bouclé Soft White, £349; Langham large sideboard, £649; Langham coffee table, £199; drip vase (on floor), £39.50; Moreton table lamp, £125; curved vase, £15; bouclé cushion, £19.50; sheepskin rug, £70; Nepal Linear rug, £509; all M&S

Sofas have been relaxing of late. Backs have lowered, armrests too (if they haven’t completely disappeared altogether, as with this one from M&S) and cushions have become increasingly sink-in squishy. The transformation continues this year, with a silhouette that is lower still and even softer. The latest are positively marshmallow-like, with barely perceptible frames and raw edges to the upholstery that encourage casual lounging. Many are modular so can be rearranged as your needs change, and even more have matching ottomans that create lovely L or U-shapes; perfect for both entertaining and relaxation.

2 WARM SCANDI

For so long the ultimate way to do cool, minimalist spaces, Scandi style has evolved into something far more cosy and cocooning, and it’s definitely keeping that warmer vibe for 2024. Moving away from greys, it’s now all about earthy beiges, contemporary off-whites and subtle taupes – hues that look so good with the natural materials typical of this pared-back style. One of the joys of these colours is the way they change throughout the day – bright natural light will reveal uplifting pink and green undertones, softening in the evening into soothing peaches and lovely subtle yellows.

3 GROWN-UP PINK

Soho Pink 266 Olive Stone emulsion, £78/2.5L, Mylands. For a similar chair, try Dunelm

Now thought of as a neutral, pink has been slowly creeping into interiors. And while the popularity of the Barbie movie has given rise to some fairly alarming shades, the real-world take includes the far-gentler whisper-soft rose, natural clay and reddish mauve; Mylands has Bloomsbury, a delicious smoky blush, as well as this gorgeous Soho Pink (below). What’s more, this hue looks great against dark woods and organic textures, such as linen or stone, and pairing with these materials means it feels sophisticated rather than sugary sweet.

4 RUFFLES
